In this talk, I'll focus on combined QM/classical approaches to treat the effect of the environement on embedded molecular systems. Examples of different phenomena and properties involving electronically excited states will be presented and dicussed to show the importance of the coupling vetween an accurate QM description of the electronic density of the embedded systems and the polarization of the environment. The main approach used to describe the environment will be a polarizable continuum model but comparisons with polarizable force fields will also be presented.
